Headquartered in Naperville, IL, Nicor Gas distributes natural gas to service areas throughout Northern Illinois, with the exception of Chicago. The fossil fuel distribution company began operations in the mid-1950s, though the company traces roots back to about 100 years prior. Roughly 130,000 customers receive natural gas transportation and storage services from the large company, which constitutes about 95% of homes in the operating territory. To effectively disseminate reserves of natural gas, Nicor uses about 35,000 miles of pipeline. AGL Resources acquired the natural gas distributor in late 2010.
